Affton School District Board of Education
The Affton School District Board of Education is a group of seven members who are publicly elected to serve as the educational advocate of our community. School board members are volunteers that receive no compensation for serving on the Board.
The Role of the Board
The key roles and responsibilities of the Board are to:
- Hire, retain and support the Superintendent
- Monitor administrative responsibilities
- Set and maintain policies
- Represent the community in school affairs
- Work to continuously improve as a Board
- Monitor district progress on established goals and objectives
All Board actions are governed by state and federal laws and Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) guidelines.
Eligibility to Serve on the Board
To be eligible for election, a local school board candidate must be:
- A citizen of the United States
- A resident taxpayer of the Affton School District
- A resident of Missouri for one year preceding election or appointment
- At least 24 years of age
District voters elect two members to a three-year term, and every third year, three members are elected. School board elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in April.
A board of education is a governmental body, so it can take action only by a majority vote(a minimum of 4 members) at a legally called public meeting. The individual board member’s major responsibility is to study, evaluate, and, after due consideration, vote in the best interest of all students at such a meeting.
